Michigan is located in the east north central part of the country and is considered a Midwestern state. Early roots

Michigan was once home to many Native American tribes before Europeans colonized the area. The tribes that were here were scattered throughout Ontario, Manitoba, Wisconsin, and Minnesota. There was a loose confederation among these tribes, which was extended to Europeans.

The early settlers that came to the area were French voyageurs in the 17th century. They established a base in what is now Canada, but soon others followed. Before the war of 1812, both Canada and Michigan had a good trading relationship. The area around Detroit changed from American to British hands and back. Many of the settlers in the area were reluctant to enter the war because of the strong bonds between the two countries. Within the next century, Detroit became a powerful player in the automotive industry when Henry Ford began the Ford company.
