Gaithersburg was founded in 1765 as an agricultural settlement know as Log Town at the time. By 1850, the town was renamed to "forest Oak". It got its official and current name in 1878, five years are the B&O Railroad built a station there. Soon after, it became a recognized town when it was selected as one of six global locations of the International Latitude Observatory. This is the only National Historic Landmark in the city.
