Kentucky Car Rental and Hazard, KY

Hazard is located in Perry County in Kentucky. The town was named after U.S. Navy Commodore Oliver Hazard Perry, who was influential during the War of 1812. When you visit with your Kentucky car rental you may find that the area is somewhat isolated by the mountains. Since the arrival of the railroad in 1912 the area has been connected with the rest of the state. Before that, you would have to get here by boat on the Kentucky River. The area may be best known when the popular show "The Dukes of Hazzard" was based on the town, although a different spelling was used. Members of the show were frequent visitors to the annual Black Gold Festival.

Wind your way around the mountain

The space that is now occupied by the City of Hazard was established in the late 18th century when Elijah Combs settled in the area with his wife and brothers. After the War of 1812, the Perry Court House was established in honor of Oliver Hazard Perry, who was victorious. Locals referred to the area as "Hazard", so the name was officially changed in 1854. With the coming of the railroad in 1912, the area began to experience a population boom and visitors came to the area. Now it is easy to get there with your Kentucky car rental, but before the railroad, you would have to travel 45 miles down the North Fork of the Kentucky River or take a two-week trip over the mountains. With the television series, The Dukes of Hazzard, the town was once again revived, with fans of the show coming in Kentucky car rentals.

Dig for gold

Every year, one of the main attractions to visit in Hazard with your Kentucky car rental is the Black Gold Festival. Preparations are still being made for this year, but in the past there have been themes such as "Under Construction for Katrina Relief". They were making contributions of cash and supplies for Katrina victims. For NASCAR fans, the festival featured the 1986 Budweiser Monte Carlo #12 driven by Neil Bonnett and the 1988 GM Monte Carlo #8 Dale Earnhardt tribute car to his father.

For kids, there is a Fun Land section, which features a mechanical bull, climbing rock wall, bounce horse, and jousting among other activities. These are more suitable for older kids and teens, but there are still lots of attractions for younger kids as well when you visit with your Kentucky car rental.
