Rhode Island Car Rental and Warwick, RI
Warwick, RI is the second largest city in the state and is a very important site in American history for you to explore with your Rhode Island car rental. It was the site of the first shot of the American Revolution and home of Civil War hero General George S. Greene.
Step back in time
Warwick was founded in 1642, as you might learn when you visit with your Rhode Island car rental, when Samuel Gorton made the “Shawhomett Purchase”. The Narragansett Indian Chief agreed to sell the land that is now Warwick, Coventry, and West Warwick for 144 fathoms of Wampumpeague (a string of white shell beads from the North Atlantic channeled whelk). There was much dispute over this trade, and the town came under Massachusetts rule. There was a stand off to arrest Gorton and his followers. Other towns in the area (Providence, Portsmouth, and Newport) united to get a royal charter allowing the towns on Narragansett Bay to form the colony of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations.
Fight on
Warwick has seen its share of violence in the past. In 1772, it was the site of the first violent act against the British Crown. Local patriots boarded the HMS Gaspee, which was charged with enforcing the Stamp Act 1765 and Townshend Acts in the area where smuggling was on Narragansett Bay. The captain of the ship was shot while resisting the taking of his ship. From this, the American Revolution had begun.
