It started with a single man

Yonkers was founded in 1646 all because of a grant that had been given to Colen Donck. He built a saw mill near the river and now near that area, there is a Colonial-era manor house that acts as a museum for visitors. For the first hundred years or so of its life as a city, Yonkers was very much a farming town. Finally in 1853, the first elevator factory was opened by the Hudson. Soon after, a carpet, plastic and hat factory was opened and things began to go very well for the city. St. Patrick’s Day is a huge event in Yonkers because much of the community is Irish-American. There is also a large Italian-American and Jewish population in the city. The main method of transportation to and from Yonkers is by train. The city has four Hudson-Line Metro-North Railroad stations that offer transportation to Glenwood, Ludlow, Greystone and Yonkers, all in New York. There used to be a railroad that ran right through the middle of the city but it was turned into various paths for walking and biking.
